Vienna Hot Chocolate

Cynthia's version of Vienna Hot Chocolate

With the holidays upon us, why not make something special for your family for Christmas morning, a decandent dessert, or even a wonderfully rich treat throughout the day?

I watched the movie "Christmas in Vienna" 2019 version on Freevee streaming. They featured Vienna Hot Chocolate in the story line. This inspired me to look up the recipes for Vienna Hot Chocolate.

This Hot Chocolate is very rich, thick, and chocolatey.

I used the Spruce Eats recipe as my original (on Google)  recipe to alter.  I altered it to my liking.

The recipes for Vienna Hot Chocolate on Google are very rich in chocolate flavor and fat.

I wanted the taste, but without so much chocolate and a little less saturated fat.

Here is my version of Vienna Hot Chocolate, which is still very decandent, rich, thick, and chocolatey.

Servings 4.

Cynthia's version of Vienna Hot Chocolate

1 1/2 cups of 1% Organic milk

4 oz of Ghirardelli 60% chocolate chips

2 Tablespoons of Ghirardelli cocoa powder

1 large egg yolk

Heat milk, cocoa, and chocolate until steaming, but not boiling!

***I used the stovetop, but you probably can use a microwave. In my experience with microwaves is that the food/  and/or drink do not seem to stay hot/warm as long as when I have used my stove to heat the food/drink.

****Note, make sure to use quality chocolate and cocoa. It will make a difference in the taste of your beverage.

Add about 1/4 cup of hot chocolate to a pyrex glass cup or any other heat proof glass container.

Add an egg yolk and mix immediately and thoroughly. I used a wire whisk to mix well.

Pour this mixture back into the pot of hot chocolate.

Mix well.

Heat the hot chocolate for another 2 minutes to cook the egg. Again, make sure you DO NOT boil the hot chocolate. The egg will curdle in it.

The hot chocolate is ready to serve. It will be thick. If this is too thick for you, add a bit more milk per cup.

Serving size is a little more then 1/3 cup/person. This is so rich, you will not need more than this.

Serve with whipping cream or marshmellows on top. Otherwise, nothing at all.

***If you like a sweeter hot chocolate, either use marshmellows on top and let them melt into the hot chocolate to sweeten it or add a bit of sugar while cooking it. Sweeten to your taste.

Looking for a different flavor other then only chocolate? Add, after cooking a candy cane for sweetness and peppermint flavor per cup.  Add vanilla for vanilla extract flavor in the pot before serving.  Add orange extract to the pot before serving for a orange-chocolate flavor.

The skies the limit!

My opinion after tasting this for the first time, "Yummmmm!"

My husbands opinions after tasting this for the first time, "Ooooh, that is good."

Happy Holidays/ Merry Christmas.
